The View from the Balcony of Aiguille-du-Midi

This month we check in with Scream Team athlete Geoff Unger, who undoubtedly leads a life filled with far more Screamer Moments than any of us back here at the office. A native of Seattle, Geoff is one of the most well trained and highly certified (IFMGA/UIAGM) mountain guides in the country. He’s a vital part of the Scream Team who has helped test our hats in some of the most extreme, and picturesque, places in the world. We caught up with Geoff after leading yet another ski tour through the Alps, this time bringing along his own father for a remarkable journey beginning in Chamonix and culminating in Zermatt.

I was particularly excited about this trip as my father was along for the journey. I’ll never grow tired of this magnificent scenery, but there’s something extra special about sharing it with others, particularly your own family.

To get the trip rolling and get some acclimatization under way we took the tram (cable car) up from Chamonix to Aiguille du Midi (literal translation “needle in the middle”). It was me, my dad and three friends. That ride is a nice way to get over the jet lag for those who have recently flown in and it makes the first day of the trip just a bit easier. We then skied the famous Vallée Blanche, an off-piste ski route, 20km long with a vertical drop of 2700m. As you might expect, the views are stunning, so much so that words could never do them justice…you really have to see it. Call me…I’ll show you the way!

Day 2 began with another lift and the real start of our tour, including a good 3000 feet of climbing to the mountain lodge where we’d spend the night. For perspective, this is far from a mountain top shack. It’s an impressive building that can sleep over 100 people.

Screams from the President - Tradeshow Season Recap & What’s Hot in Hats PDF Print E-mail
News Articles & Press Releases

By Jan Burkholder
President of Screamer, Inc.

The 2011 tradeshow season has disappeared in our rear view mirror and we’re excited to share that our sales are trending up almost 30%!  Highlighted by the SIA, Outdoor retailer, and ISPO this was our 19th year and the experience can be summed up in one word:
TRAPPERS.  Classic Trapper hats were the hot item to be had this winter season and Screamer has already nailed it with some of the best styles.  This was followed by a push for our “S3” Super Soft Fleece neck warmers because of the ultimate softness, quality, durability and price!

This season we've listened to our customers, really put our heads together, and matched up what's upcoming in the hat world. We have designed clean and flattering hats paying attention to the finishing touches such as buttons, patterns and prints, colors, new fabric blends and most importantly, warmth. New styles come and go, but the ones that have stayed in the Screamer collection are always being tweaked for improvement. We have broadened our line a bit, allowing room for new beanies, bandanas, trapper hats, and earflap hats.

Here is a sneak peek into our predictions for next season:

1.     Trapper Hats: To complete your winter look we offer a variety of styles and patterns to choose from. Either way as the snow falls and temperature drops you will be stylish and cozy. Styles and pattern trends include stripes, jacquard, plaid, cable knit and corduroy. As for outer protection; stay warm with classic faux fur, leather, and suede. To prevent those winter chills from coming in, ear flaps can be worn down for full ear protection with either a button chin strap or ties. If the weather warms up, simply snap or tie it up! Our trapper hats come in a style that is fit for everyone! Look for our best sellers, Vodka Bar and Aviator.

2.     Earflaps: Peruvian and Sherpa’s are popular this year showing off both tradition and warmth. Offered in a full or fleece band lining using only our signature “S3” Super Soft Fleece. Tight knit wool/acrylic blends give you the benefit of a comfortable fit while staying toasty. This year we have added detailed tassels and stylish accents.

3.     Billed Beanies: In the streets we have billed beanies offered in a variety of patterns, styles and colors. These beanies keep your dome warm while the bill keeps the sun and snow out of your eyes.  Look out for our Zip Rock which is flying off the shelves!

4.     Beanies: How do you stay warm and cool at the same time? One word, a Beanie. A fashionable, practical and warm accessory to any outdoor activity. This year we have added more styles, knits and patterns to our line. Slouchy hats have shrunk in slouch and beanies have a loosened knit for a casual street wear. Cable knits, bold stripes and colors with poms are spotted on the slopes. Look out for our Osborne and Brenda beanies!

"We're incredibly proud of Glen on this well deserved honor," said Jan Burkholder, President of Screamer Hats. "Glen may very well be the hardest working guy in the business. He's been enthusiastically sharing his passion for skiing, and for life, for a long time so it's perfectly fitting to see him recognized in this way. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Glen and his family."

With Plake’s Down Home Tour he intends to rev up energy and his share his true appreciation of the sport by hanging out and teaching locals how to ski. He will show up to resorts large and small unannounced in order to avoid distracting publicity for a more intimate experience.
